Barosse for a romantic getaway by Antonina Lobanova

New Year 2016… We were considering several options for how to celebrate it. Some of the options considered were:

At home, in Russia, with 'Olivier' salad, tangerines, Soviet champagne and presidential speech when the Kremlin clock rings followed by typical Russian musical programs.

At home, in Spain, with ham, croquettes, Rioja wine and loud family conversations in Spanish.

Visiting a big European city with fireworks and a bunch of drunk partygoers celebrating along with us.

Stay at home in Germany and invite friends

Or a romantic getaway somewhere…

In the end, the idea of a romantic getaway got the most votes (even if there were only two of us voting) and since I was looking forward to the idea of celebrating last new year, only two of us seemed very attractive. My pregnancy didn't make traveling easy. We didn't want to fly too far or too far. So in the end we decided to stay in Spain after Christmas and look for a place for a romantic getaway there. And I must say that it is not very difficult since I think that Spain is an incredible country full of possible places for a romantic getaway or any other type of places.

Here I must thank my man as he was the one who found the beautiful place that I am about to share with you. So we packed our things and hit the road. I only knew that it was a romantic place near the mountain and only for adults (luckily pregnant women were allowed).

Driving with a 7 month pregnant woman is not always fun, the number of stops we had to make alone during 3 hours of travel was too high compared to our previous, so to speak, normal car trips. The good thing is that the area is very beautiful and you can enjoy the stops not only for your physical needs but also for your eyes and your memory. So you can imagine that we arrived quite late and searching for the final destination at night in the middle of nowhere was never easy. Doing a couple of extra twists and turns (as always the marina is useless in such a situation) we finally found the place. Just looking at the sign on the door and the door itself gave me good vibes… I already knew the place was going to be amazing. We knocked on the door and a lovely man appeared. We were supposed to follow him... and we did... passing through the garden, the entrance, the stairs... 'oh God... where are we?', I thought. So beautiful, so romantic, so elegant. We took a little tour of the house: beautifully decorated rooms, luxurious antique furniture, relaxing spa smell, tranquility... it was all like saying that we were going to have an unforgettable New Year's celebration. We then entered our room, which was in a small house outside the main house. Garden, trees, lights, fountain… I thought I was in a fairy tale. We opened the door and the interior decoration was simply amazing. If you Google “romantic getaway,” an image of this place should appear. Warm air, candle lights in the dark, slow music in the background, bubble bath in the room... Every detail of the place was extraordinary. It was like a castle but better than a castle.

We unpacked and settled in. Of course, the first thing I did was take a photo and check social media. So I couldn't resist and jumped on the bubble bath tab with an 'inside' view. As my man said, “It's a perfect place for newlyweds to have babies.” Well, we're a little late for that :)

Waking up in a place like this was as romantic as our arrival in the evening was. Sun, blue sky, a little cold and mountains in the background. Perfect December day. We went to breakfast and were still amazed. The food at this location was first class. Everything homemade, not too much but delicious. Well, speaking of Spanish food, I'm afraid I would have to write a separate blog about it.

The New Year celebration was also special. We were 4 couples, totally strangers to each other and the only thing in common was staying at the Barosse hotel. It was definitely different. So in the end we met nice people, had interesting conversations (I really wished my Spanish was better), dined on an incredibly delicious 3-course meal with fantastic Spanish wine, followed the Spanish traditions of eating grapes when the clock bell rang, and enjoyed of some music.

The place has been renovated by a lovely couple: the owners of the hotel. They have 4 rooms in the house and one room in a small house outside. All of them are beautifully decorated. The main house has a spa and sauna for even greater relaxation if you can imagine it. The food is homemade and everything is prepared by the owners with local products. So you feel very “homie” there.

Also the surrounding area is beautiful (Jaca, Huesca, Aragón, Spain). You need a car to drive. And if you are in the Barosse it is worth visiting the town of Jaca with its fortress, cathedral and delicious local food and wine restaurants.

I do not regret. I hope we return one day, but for us it will be a while since we will have to wait for the little one to grow a little.
